In Vedic astrology, there are nine planets that are considered to be significant in a person’s horoscope. These are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu (the north node of the Moon) and Ketu (the south node of the Moon).
The planets are also associated with certain elements, which are used in the interpretation of a horoscope. The Sun is associated with the element fire, the Moon with water, Mars with air, Mercury with earth, Jupiter with ether (akasha), Venus with mind (manas) and Saturn with space (akasha).
The planets also have certain exaltation and debilitation points. The Sun is exalted in Aries and debilitated in Libra, the Moon is exalted in Taurus and debilitated in Scorpio, Mars is exalted in Capricorn and debilitated in Cancer, Mercury is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces, Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn, Venus is exalted in Pisces and debilitated in Virgo, Saturn is exalted in Libra and debilitated in Aries.
The planets also have certain directional strengths. The Sun is strongest when it is rising (in the east), the Moon when it is at its full or new phase, Mars when it is above the horizon, Mercury when it is in the same sign as the Sun, Jupiter when it is in its own sign or in Sagittarius, Venus when it is in Taurus or Libra, and Saturn when it is in its own sign or in Aquarius.
The planets also have certain aspects (angles) which are considered to be important in interpretation. The Sun has an opposition aspect, the Moon a square aspect, Mars a trine aspect, Mercury a sextile aspect, Jupiter a sextile or trine aspect, Venus a trine or sextile aspect, and Saturn a square or opposition aspect.
